Leading the effort to protect and restore the BWCAW from adverse environmental threats is the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. The Friends’’ mission is to protect, preserve and restore the wilderness character of the BWCAW and the Quetico-Superior Ecosystem. The organization formed in 1976 to protect this vulnerable area and two years later shepherded legislation through Congress that brought full protection to the Boundary Waters. Today, the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based organization of 4,000 members is a sentry against further harm in the BWCAW and the Quetico-Superior Ecosystem. Their current fight against the threat of sulfide mining that could adversely affect not only the BWCAW but areas in the watershed extending to Duluth, Lake Superior and beyond is crucial to support.

The Trumpeter Swan Society (TTSS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to assuring the vitality and welfare of wild Trumpeter Swan populations.

Early settlers nearly destroyed this magnificent species, but many people have worked hard to save the last remnants and start them on the path to recovery. It is now up to us all to help nurture that recovery and help ensure that Trumpeter Swans will be secure in our modern world. TTSS is a means for those who cherish these swans to work together and support their continued restoration.

Since the founding in 1968, TTSS has provided the vision, knowledge, and advocacy to move restoration efforts forward and improve management of Trumpeter Swans across North America. The 500+ members in the U.S. and Canada include interested private citizens, waterfowl propagators, businesses, and many of the professional waterfowl biologists and managers who have guided Trumpeter Swan management in recent decades.

Sustainable Twin Ports is dedicated to furthering economic, environmental & social sustainability in the western Lake Superior region through education, networking and action. Community – Environment – Economy – We believe everyone in the twin ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI value the health of all three. Sustainable Twin Ports has decided to move from belief to action by teaching our neighbors, businesses and public entities how to take meaningful steps toward sustainability. We all make hundreds of decisions every day, all day long. While most of us consider the economic side, few stop long enough to consider the effects of those decisions on the Environment, or on other people. By working together, we can create transformational change toward a healthier community, a healthier environment and a healthier bottom line.
